Projector lamps provide you with the ability to project images onto screens or within other systems. However, this projector lamp technology can be expensive, and with good reason.
Projection isn’t just a term that Freud wants you to believe your mother caused. No, projection lamps are still popular way to bring your more light and color into real life and into even the biggest room of your home. But the question remains – why are projector lamps so expensive? After all, isn’t a lamp just a lamp? Well, if you thought all lamps were created equal, think again. There IS a reason why projector lamps are so expensive.
Projector Lamps are Pricey
In most projector lamps, the process of lighting is far more complicated than a regular bulb. Instead of simply igniting a coil, projector lamps ignite high-pressure mercury vapor. This vapor has been compressed into a quartz tube. When the ignition switch is turned on, so to speak, electricity jumps across the mercury vapor and lights up your life.
This is a complicated (read: expensive) process, as a result. And there were some smart men and women who came up with the idea of lighting up a dangerous chemical in order to produce the light that then shines onto an LCD display in order to produce beautiful images for your entertainment. They too needed to be paid for their time and their effort – out of your wallet, sort of.
Different Bulbs and Wattages for Everyone
What you also need to keep in mind is that different bulbs require different levels of power (a.k.a. wattage). The more wattage you want, the more you will have to pay. Mercury vapor just doesn’t grow on trees. Well, yet anyway.
The good news is that while projector lamps are so expensive, they often last far longer than traditional light bulbs. These lamps can have lives of up to 2000 hours of use, and that’s constant use. Some have less, but the point is that you get a lot for the money you do spend, so when you think about it, the high price tag is worth it.
